How to choose a compounding pharmacy in Wichita, KS

If your provider has prescribed a compounded medication — a hormone cream, a flavored liquid for your child, or a pet-sized dose — where it's made matters. Here's what Wichita patients should know before choosing a compounder.

What is compounding?

Compounding is when a pharmacist prepares a medication for one specific patient: a strength that isn't sold commercially, a different form (cream, troche, liquid, capsule), or a formula without dyes, gluten or other ingredients you need to avoid. Every compound starts with a prescription from your doctor or veterinarian.

Local, partial, or online — what's the difference?

Compounded prescriptions in Wichita generally come from one of three places:

  • A local pharmacy that compounds everything in-house. Your prescription is made here, for you.
  • A local pharmacy that compounds only some products. Other items are ordered in from outside suppliers.
  • Online or 503B outsourcing facilities. Products are made in large batches, often out of state, and shipped.

Dandurand Drugstore is the only pharmacy in Wichita that compounds ALL of its compounded products locally, in our own lab. See the full side-by-side on our Why Local? page.

Why local compounding helps

  • Talk to the person who makes it. Ask questions face to face with a Wichita pharmacist.
  • Faster changes. When your labs or symptoms change, we can work with your provider on a new strength without waiting on mail order.
  • Pick up close to home. Most compounds are ready in 3–5 business days at any of our four Wichita stores, or by local delivery.
  • Made to your prescription. Every dose is compounded at the strength your provider prescribes — no fixed menu.

Questions to ask any compounder

  1. Is my medication made in your own pharmacy, or ordered in from a 503B facility?
  2. Which USP standards does your lab follow? (Ours: USP <795>, <797>, <800>.)
  3. Can I speak with the pharmacist who prepares it?
  4. How long does it take, and can I pick it up locally?
